The Department of International Language and Culture Studies offers bachelor’s degrees in French, German, Spanish, and limited courses in other languages. There are study abroad opportunities in which majors and non-majors are encouraged to participate.

French

The Department of International Language and Culture Studies offers majors a B.A. in French and a B.A. with teaching certification; a minor and a teaching minor in French; and study-abroad opportunities.

French is the language of many fascinating countries and cultures in Africa, parts of Asia, Europe, and the Americas. French-speaking countries influence many fields of study, such as the arts, philosophy, politics and world economy, science, and technology. With a degree in French, you may continue your education in languages or expand into other fields at a graduate school or you may pursue a career in business or teaching.

Both majors and non-majors are encouraged to study abroad. For those who wish to study French, opportunities are available in Belgium, Canada, France, Switzerland, the French Antilles, Senegal or La Reunion. See Study Abroad section below for more information.

German

The Department of International Language and Culture Studies offers majors a B.A. in German and a B.A. with teacher certification; a minor and a teaching minor in German; and study abroad opportunities.

German is the language of a major culture and will be increasingly important in the context of rapid change in Europe early in the 21st century. German-speaking countries influence the arts, journalism, medicine, philosophy, politics, technology, and the world economy. Students with interests in business or international studies are encouraged to learn German. The Department of International Language and Culture Studies offers a full curriculum, including German culture, language, and literature. A major in German may be combined with a major in another field, a business minor, or a teaching certificate. With a major in German and a degree, in particular a B.A., you may continue your education in languages or expand into other fields at a graduate school, or you may pursue a career in business or teaching.

Both majors and non-majors are encouraged to study abroad. For those who wish to study German, opportunities are available in Austria, Germany, or Switzerland. See Study Abroad section below for more information.

Spanish

The Department of International Language and Culture Studies offers majors a B.A. in Spanish and B.A. a with teacher certification; a minor and a teaching minor in Spanish; and study abroad opportunities.

Spanish is the language of nearly 300 million of the world’s people, including many millions in the United States. It is the official language of Spain as well as most of the countries of the western hemisphere. Increasingly, Spanish is a language of commercial, cultural, and political importance in the world. The Department of International Language and Culture Studies offers a full curriculum in the culture, language, and literature of Latin America and Spain. A major in Spanish may be combined with a major in another field, a business minor, or a teaching certificate. With a major in Spanish and a degree, in particular a B.A., you may continue your education in languages or expand into other fields at a graduate school, or you may pursue a career in business or teaching.

Both majors and non-majors are encouraged to study abroad. For those who wish to study Spanish, opportunities are available in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Spain, or Uruguay. See Study Abroad section below for more information.

Study Abroad

Both majors and non-majors are encouraged to study abroad. Programs are available at all levels to study French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and many more. Students can take courses in language and culture, content area courses in a host language, or a mix of English and host language courses. Students have the option of over 600 programs in over 90 different countries for anywhere between two weeks and two semesters; plus financial aid applies. Pay IPFW tuition and housing and study in over 50 countries with ISEP exchange! There are also many generous scholarships for students to study a language abroad for either a summer or semester.
