BUS 43800 - Healthcare Law And Ethics



The purpose of this online course is to introduce students to key legal and policy issues involving the U.S. health care system. Basic principles underlying the legal system, governmental regulation, development of legal rules, and how to interact effectively with the legal system as a public health practitioner will be approached.

Enrollment in business (BUS) courses numbered 30100 and above is restricted to students who meet established criteria: business majors who have met the pre-business requirements and been admitted into one of the business majors; or students that have declared other pre-approved programs or minors which require particular business courses, and completed all course prerequisites; or students that have obtained written permission from the department through which the course is offered.
Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Define, identify, or describe legal, ethical, and moral boundaries pertaining to the provision of healthcare services.
2.  Demonstrate understanding and application healthcare tort law, including negligence and malpractice, including how to minimize their risks or consequences.
3.  Demonstrate an understanding of contract law and its application in the healthcare profession.
4.  Demonstrate an understanding of criminal law and its application in the healthcare profession.
5.  Understand the law related to fraud and abuse in healthcare. 
6.  Identify basic aspects of corporate and employment law related to healthcare organizations.
7.  Apply ethical thinking and analysis to healthcare case studies.
