BIOL 29100 - Research Methods In Biology



Students will be introduced to the philosophy and practices underlying scientific research in the biological sciences using structured lectures and real-life experiences. Students will be exposed to the active research in the department as well possible opportunities to participate in research. Such experiences could later become the basis for a senior capstone project.

Preparation for Course
P: BIOL 21700; P or C: BIOL 21800. Restricted to Biology majors.

Student Learning Outcomes
1. Explore peer-reviewed literature through field-specific and general databases and evaluate the value and utility of individual resources.
2. Build a hypothesis through the development of appropriate questions to address a scientific problem based on the primary literature.
3. Design an appropriate experiment to answer a hypothesis, including how to address problems should they arise.
4. Analyze data produced during an experiment, including the application of field-appropriate statistical tool.
5. Critique a paper from the literature, identifying its key elements as well as both good and bad aspects.
6. Compose an experimental proposal that demonstrates understanding of research methods and design.
7. Develop a resume or CV outline on which to build while preparing for future careers and further educational opportunities.
