BIOL 33100 - Zoo Immersion



This course is co-designed with zoo professionals with the intention of providing students with an intensive introduction zoo operations. University instructors and zoo staff will provide students with both classic-lecture and hands-on learning on various topics that zoo professionals deal with during their careers. Students will go behind-the-scenes at a local zoo and gain skills and experience that will help them build a career associated with zoos, aquariums, or similar organizations.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Provide care for specific zoo species with guidance.
2.  Recognize signs of illness or distress in zoo animals and suggest/provide preventative health measures.
3.  Create engaging environments for animals to promote natural behaviors and mental stimulation.
4.· Conduct behavioral monitoring research and data analyses.
5.· Understand positive reinforcement training for zoo animal medical procedures.
6.  Understand the role that zoos have in local, regional, and global conservation efforts.
7.  Conduct effective public engagement.
