COM 46800 - Critique In Media And Rhetoric
In this course, students will learn contemporary media and rhetorical methods of analysis. The course will cover quantitative, qualitative, and critical methods for understanding the construction of meaning in media and rhetorical artifacts. This course may survey methods including semiotics, genre analysis, ideological analysis, narrative criticism, critical rhetoric, political economy, archival research, discourse analysis, ideographic analysis, feminist criticism, critical race theory, visual rhetoric, dramatism, and/or others based on instructor expertise.
Preparation for Course P: COM 31200 and 33000.
Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the academic and cultural value of media analysis and rhetorical criticism.
2. Demonstrate facility with a variety of critical approaches to rhetorical and media texts to illuminate the functions of various arguments and representations towards the end of persuasion and/or cultural change.
3. Develop the capacity for independent criticism and thought.
4. Identify and critically examine how media representations and the rhetorical practices that surround them influence their own views, behaviors, and decisions.
5. Hone argumentative writing skills.
