MUSC 12400 - Commercial Applied Bass
This course is private instruction to promote and cultivate beginning bass guitar and/or upright bass techniques with emphasis on real-world commercial applications that include sight reading, reading chord charts, playing in diverse styles with other musicians. Open to music minors, students taking a secondary instrument, and other non-music majors.
Preparation for Course P: Department permission required.
Cr. 1. Notes May be repeated for credit.
Lab fee for material costs and studio maintenance. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Interpret and accurately perform basic notated bass lines and rhythms.
2. Perform assigned major scales and common pentatonic forms, then present a prepared 12-bar blues walking bass line.
3. Differentiate, select, and execute appropriate right-hand techniques (e.g., thumb, alternating fingers, slap, pick).
4. Prepare and perform two contrasting works, defending stylistic decisions (tone, articulation, groove, phrasing) with genre-specific vocabulary.
