MUSC 23500 - Commercial Applied Piano



Private applied lessons at the 200-level include a focus on an elementary knowledge of written music, both notation and chord symbols, a working knowledge of all major scales, and how to voice chords in an improvisational setting.

Preparation for Course
P: Department permission required. Restricted to students admitted to a program in the School of Music.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Develop proficiency in playing all major and minor scales and arpeggios, hands separate, then together, as required by the assigned pieces.
2.  Classify and perform pentatonic, blues, and one church mode (Dorian or Mixolydian) equal to the requirements of the assigned repertoire.
3.  Interpret and realize chord symbols.
4.  From a simple lead sheet, perform melody & accompaniment, follow a roadmap (repeats/D.S./Coda), and adapt groove/dynamics to style.
5.  Prepare and perform one short classical piece, analyzing articulation, phrasing, and pedal, and justifying choices, in line with published benchmarks.
