MUSC 12500 - Commercial Applied Piano
This course is private, 25-minute applied lessons at the 100-level that includes a focus on an elementary knowledge of written music, both notation and chord symbols, a working knowledge of major scales, and how to voice chords in an improvisational setting. Open to music minors, students taking a secondary instrument, Musical Theatre students in their first three semesters of study, and other non-music majors.
Preparation for Course P: Department permission required.
Cr. 1. Notes May be repeated for credit.
Lab fee for material costs and studio maintenance. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Develop proficiency in assigned one-octave major and natural/harmonic minor scales and arpeggios, hands separate then together.
2. Classify and perform pentatonic and blues scales as applied to the assigned repertoire.
3. Interpret and realize chord symbols.
4. From a simple lead sheet, perform melody and accompaniment.
5. Prepare and perform one short classical piece analyzing articulation, phrasing, and pedal, and justifying choices, at the level appropriate to published benchmarks.
