MUSC 12200 - Commercial Applied Guitar



This course is a private instruction to promote and cultivate foundational guitar techniques in all genres with emphasis on skills such as reading notation and rhythms, playing chords and scales, and developing improvisational skills. Each semester of study will explore genre-specific repertory and interpretive skills. For music minors, students taking a secondary instrument, and other non-music majors.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Interpret and perform standard notation in 1st-2nd position (simple meters, basic divisions), marking counting/fingerings and self-correcting errors. 
2.  Form and switch common open chords (C, A, G, E, D families) and introduce movable/barre shapes (E- and A-forms), choosing voicings that fit register and ease of motion. 
3.  Execute major scales in 1st position and minor/major pentatonic patterns and create a short melody/solo that targets chord tones. 
4.  Maintain steady strumming patterns in simple and compound meters, place accents, and adapt pattern to dynamics and feel. 
5.  Prepare and perform two short pieces in contrasting styles (e.g., pop vs. folk/blues), justifying choices for tempo, strum/groove, and tone (pick vs. fingers, capo as needed).
