BIOL 51602 - Advanced Genetics Lab

In this course you will experience current methods in genetics and genomics in a semester-long research project that corresponds with the material taught in an advanced genetics lecture course (BIOL 50600 or 51501). This course is designed as a CRE (Course-based Research Experience) to give you the opportunity to participate in primary research projects. This semester’s project will involve the characterization of a genetic modifier of disease. In the course of this research, you will gain experience in a number of important techniques in genetics and molecular biology.

Preparation for Course
P: BIOL 21800 with a grade of C- or higher.

C: BIOL 50600 OR BIOL 51501.

Cr. 1.
Notes
Restricted to Biology majors.
Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Identify the appropriate experimental techniques required to address a particular biological problem.
2.  Design those experiments using available tools in the lab.
3.  Generate data while gaining practical experience in genetics and molecular biology by participating in primary research projects.
4.  Write and revise a manuscript that could be published in a scientific journal.
