MUSC 28341 - Popular Music Performance Ensemble



A collaborative ensemble where students implement skills developed on their primary or secondary instrument into a “popular music” setting, typically comprised of a rhythm section, vocalists, and soloists as available. Emphasis placed on writing and reading charts, roles within an ensemble, listening skills, and professional expectations in the music industry.

Preparation for Course
P: Instructor permission required.  Open to all university students, contingent upon successful audition.

Student Learning Outcomes
1. Conduct themselves professionally in a rehearsal environment.
2. Read and write parts using the modern conventions of their instrument.
3. Create and read both letter charts and number charts.
4. Implement basic music theory (harmony, transposition, transcription, substitution, embellishment) into ensemble arrangements.
5. Define managerial roles within a band and execute off-stage tasks.
6. Create Stage Plots and Input Lists relevant to upcoming performances.
7. Set up a simple rehearsal sound system and mix.
8. Evaluate a performance (postmortem) and write recommendations.
