MUSC 38366 - Music Business: Start Up To Success



This course introduces students to the knowledge, skills, and perspectives required to manage a record label or music publishing company, whether launching a start-up or working within an established organization. Emphasizing the start-up environment, students will explore the fundamentals of music business management through readings, case studies, practical exercises, and class discussions. By the end of the course, students will have developed a strong foundation in the principles and practices necessary to successfully operate and grow a music business.

Preparation for Course
P: Admitted as a Music Industry or Popular Music major in the School of Music.

1.  Demonstrate how the music industry has adapted and changed in the past decades.
2.  Identify marketing techniques for a new artist and determine when each should be used.
3.  Breakdown the roles of record label.
4.  Demonstrate how to calculate and oversee artists and publishing royalties.
5.  Use industry software and websites to register and manage artist and songwriter catalogs.
6.  Illustrate how live and recorded sides of the industry intersect and contribute to the success of the artist.
