MUSC 38311 - Music And Audio For Video
This course explores the principles, processes, and techniques involved in creating and producing audio for visual media. Students will examine the role of sound in enhancing narrative, emotion, and impact across film, television, games, and digital platforms. Emphasis will be placed on audio recording, editing, mixing, and synchronization, as well as the creative and technical considerations unique to working with picture. By the end of the course, students will have developed both a practical skill set and a critical understanding of how audio contributes to the overall production process in visual media.
Preparation for Course P: MUSC 20300 with grade of C- or better and admitted into a program of the School of Music.
Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Synchronize Pro Tools sessions with video formats such as QuickTime movies and external sources including digital field recorders.
2. Transfer and organize audio data between Pro Tools and professional video editing applications such as Media Composer and Final Cut Pro.
3. Record, edit, and produce narration, dialogue replacement (ADR), Foley, and sound effects that meet professional standards.
4. Develop and implement cue sheets and marker lists in Pro Tools to locate and position audio events efficiently.
5. Analyze and repair production audio to remove unwanted noise or distortion using digital restoration tools.
6. Calibrate and test multi-channel monitoring systems to ensure accurate sound reproduction.
7. Mix and balance audio for stereo and multi-channel formats using professional post-production techniques.
8. Render and export final mixes to delivery formats including QuickTime video and master audio files.
9. Collaborate and evaluate the effectiveness of teamwork with directors, editors, and music supervisors to complete post-production projects in a professional workflow.
