A study of popular and commercial songwriting, with a focus on the details of the craft, including song form, chord progressions, melody, and lyrics.

Preparation for Course
P: MUSC 18102 or MUSC 11400 with grade of C- or better and admitted into a program of the School of Music.

Student Learning Outcomes
1. Write a complete song at will, without waiting for inspiration to strike.
2. Identify the objective of the songs they are writing.
3. Explain writing techniques used to achieve these objectives.
4. Listen critically and evaluate the effectiveness of songs in achieving their objectives.
