WOST 21000 - Introduction To Women’s And Gender Studies



An interdisciplinary introduction to women’s and gender studies via readings from core discipline areas and presentation of methodological/bibliographical tools for research in women’s studies. Includes an examination of women’s historic and contemporary status legally, politically, and economically, as well as women’s struggles in identity, expression, sexuality, and lifestyle.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Examine the issues, problems, questions, and assumptions that have shaped the field of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies.
2.  Understand social/cultural constructions of gender as a category of identity, their impact on the individual and society, and how they intersect with other categories of identity.
3.  Develop reading and analytical skills through the study of expository and argumentative writings and other media of various complexity.
4.  Formulate significant critical questions about gender and sexuality, including women’s lives and experiences.
5.  Research and write about these questions effectively.
