EDU 54400 - Strategies For Social, Behavioral, And Communication Skills For Students With Autism


This course explores evidence-based strategies and practical applications for managing behavior, enhancing communication, and developing social skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Topics include behavior management using Functional Behavior Analysis (FBA), social and communication skills training, accommodations and modifications, and addressing sensory issues. The course is designed for graduate students in psychology, education, social work, and healthcare who aim to deepen their understanding of ASD and improve their professional skills in supporting this population.

Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Identify critical social, behavioral, and communication challenges in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
2. Learn and apply evidence-based practices (EBPs) to promote positive behaviors in children with ASD, including principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and positive behavior support (PBS).
3. Conduct individual assessments of social, behavioral, and communication needs using Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) techniques.
4. Design classroom environments that enhance emotional regulation, foster healthy social interactions, and promote positive peer relationships for children with ASD.
5. Examine and implement the use of assistive technology and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods to support effective communication in children with ASD.
6. Develop skills to collaborate with families and IEP team members to promote positive behaviors and social-communication skills, incorporating culturally competent approaches in educational and family settings.
