EDU 53300 - Autism Spectrum Disorders And Evidence Based Practices


This course examines current evidence-based strategies and their practical application for educating children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It focuses on promoting inclusive, individualized, and effective educational environments. Students will explore current research and practical applications of instructional and behavior management strategies while learning to use collaborative approaches with families and IEP team members. Topics include educational strategies, classroom instruction, social communication skills training, accommodations and modifications, sensory issues, and the role of assistive technology. The course is designed for graduate students in psychology, education, social work, and healthcare seeking to enhance their professional skills in working with individuals with ASD.

Student Learning Outcomes
1. Identify and evaluate evidence-based educational practices for teaching children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including instructional strategies, classroom accommodations, and modifications.

2. Conduct individual assessments of children with ASD in academic, social, behavioral, and communication areas using Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA).

3. Design effective classroom environments that promote healthy social interactions, emotional regulation, and academic engagement for children with ASD.

4. Learn strategies for promoting positive behaviors in children with ASD, emphasizing applied behavior analysis (ABA) and positive behavior support.

5. Examine the use of assistive technology and augmentative and alternative communication methods to support effective language use in children with ASD.

6. Learn how to work collaboratively with families and IEP team members using culturally competent methods to support the success of children with ASD in school.
