EDU 52200 - Introduction To Autism Spectrum Disorders


This course offers a comprehensive exploration of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) through a multidisciplinary lens. It includes the latest research and theoretical frameworks that define ASD, addressing diagnostic criteria, developmental trajectories, and neurobiological underpinnings. Students will examine the diverse presentations of ASD across the lifespan, focusing on cognitive, behavioral, and social functioning. The course is tailored for graduate students in fields such as psychology, education, social work, and healthcare who aim to deepen their understanding of ASD and enhance their professional skills in supporting individuals with this condition.

1. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the etiology, prevalence, and diagnostic criteria of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), including variations in presentation across the lifespan.

2. Analyze and critique major theoretical frameworks and models of autism, such as neurodevelopmental, psychological, and socio-cultural perspectives.

3. Evaluate various assessment tools and diagnostic methods for identifying autism, including standardized tests, observational methods, and interviews, with attention to cultural and contextual factors.

4. Investigate and propose evidence-based intervention strategies tailored to individual needs, considering factors such as age, level of functioning, and co-occurring conditions.

5. Assess the social, emotional, mental health, and economic impacts of autism on individuals and their families and propose support strategies and resources to enhance their quality of life.
