MUSC 54300 - Advanced Practice I: Infants, Children, & Adolescents


An applied clinical practice course focused on the development of advanced clinical skills in assessment, treatment implementation, evaluation, and termination in settings serving infants, children, and adolescents. Includes exploration of collaborative work with other child and family service professionals, practice in self-reflection and self-assessment of skill, and group supervision in seminar format.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Demonstrate knowledge and skill in applying the four methods of music therapy for the purposes of assessment, treatment, and evaluation of infants, children or adolescents, relative to the clinical setting.
2.  Develop and demonstrate skill in elaborating on music processes to meet clinical needs of children in assessment and treatment implementation.
3.  Document assessment, treatment, and evaluation information in accordance with the Standards of Clinical Practice and in the required format of the clinical placement.
4.  Translate music evidence language into the language of treatment goals and objectives within documentation.
5.  Effectively translate and communicate music evidence to parents, guardians, or caregivers to actively engage them in the child’s treatment process.
6.  Interpret musical behaviors based on developmental theory and respond clinically to support the child’s growth and development.
7.  Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to respond, musically, behaviorally and verbally, in the moment to important events as they occur in music therapy sessions.
8.  Practice in a manner that reflects an understanding of and respect for cultural differences in clientele, their families and support systems, other professionals, and other treatment and facility staff.
9.  Identify one’s own strengths, limitations, and learning needs, and develop a plan to address these moving forward.
10.  Make full use of supervision in individual and group formats in order to advance level of effective and ethical clinical practice.
11.  Develop self-care practice and utilize supervision and/or personal therapy to address personal issues and countertransference that could potentially impact provision of music therapy services.
