ENGL 50601 - Teaching Composition Practicum


This is a practicum for teaching assistants (TAs) in the Department of English and Linguistics who have successfully completed C505 (50501) and are in either their first or second semester of teaching composition for the Writing Program. The class focuses on issues involving teaching writing as they arise for the TAs in the college classroom. Subject matter is largely student-driven but mentor-guided to assist and enhance teaching.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Learn how to become an excellent college composition instructor; to provide mentorship while you teach ENGL 13100.
2.  Focus on pedagogy and share with others what you do (as a writer, as a teacher of writing) and how you do it in the classroom.
3.  Discuss theoretical and philosophical frameworks for teaching composition - i.e., based on theory and research in writing studies - that provides a rationale for specific strategies and pedagogies for teaching writing.
