COM 56000 - Rhetorical Dimension Of Mass Media A study of the ways in which rhetorical elements and processes are embodied in and modified by the media of mass communication. The rhetorical functions of print and electronic media are examined individually, as well as within the context of specific campaigns and movements.

Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes
1. Learn the fundamentals of Aristotlean rhetoric, rhetorical criticism, and the rhetorical situation as well as critical theories and approaches about representation, signification, and ideology in language and culture with which to evaluate race, class, gender and other representations contributing to existing social relations.
2. Perform critical rhetorical analyses of visual themes and media representations to the above identities using critical theories and methodologies, including: framing; semiotics and signification; ethos, logos, and pathos; and cultural hegemony.
3. Gain greater critical awareness and cultural understanding of persuasion and its audience-based ingredients as it relates to popular and dominant representations of race, ethnicity, gender and social class in media, politics, education, and everyday life.
4. Consider alternative rhetorical themes for communication with which to build community, civic engagement, and character in everyday life.
5. Improve communication skills through writing polemical essays and oral presentations. |
