BIOL 58400 - Molecular Biology And Applications Laboratory The lab will consist of mini-projects that will emphasize the applications of several molecular biology techniques such as non-isotopic DNA detection by Southern Blot hybridization, nucleic acid purification (plasmid and genomic DNA, RNA), DNA restriction digestion and analysis by agarose gel electrophoresis, library construction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), quantitative real-time PCR, protein purification and antibody-antigen interactions.
Preparation for Course P or C: BIOL 50900.
Cr. 1. Hours Lab. 3. Student Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze primary literature.
2. Demonstrate the ability to collect data, analyze data, conduct a literature review and write a report.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the scientific process in the context of learning the fundamental biological and chemical facts of molecular biology.
4. Demonstrate the skills required to effectively do scientific research i.e. learn to implement the scientific method by proposing hypotheses to explain biological phenomena, designing and conducting experiments to test the hypotheses and critically interpret the resulting data.
5. Understand safe laboratory practices, perform basic molecular biology techniques, generate hypotheses, analyze and evaluate data. |
