MUSC 25800 - Music & Ability



This course examines a broad range of characteristics and abilities related to disorders, illnesses and injuries, and the affordances of music to support the full potential of individuals who are differently-abled. Includes consideration of music in early development, music in special education, and physical and mental health applications, as well as consideration of legal and ethical issues related to the provision of music therapy services to differently-abled clients.

P: Admitted into the Music Therapy (BSMT) program.

Student Learning Outcomes
1.  Understand and verbalize in appropriate nomenclature the concepts related to limitations in the various domains of health and development.
2.  Identify standard strengths and limitations for a wide variety of clientele groups with whom music therapists work.
3.  Demonstrate understanding of differences in ableness and their impact on the planning and clinical implementation process for music therapy.
4.  Verbalize and demonstrate understanding of the affordances and challenges of music experiences and how they relate to the needs of individuals who are differently-abled.
5.  Demonstrate the ability to appropriately modify music engagement in response to client’s limitations and existing resources.
6.  Develop self-awareness of one’s own thoughts, feelings, preconceived notions, and biases about various clientele groups.
