ILCS 26100 - Introduction To The Linguistic Study Of Foreign Languages
Overview of linguistics and the role of language and society; fundamental concepts of linguistic analysis. The course focuses on linguistic phenomena found in French, German, Russian, and Spanish, with material, examples, and assignments drawn primarily from those languages whenever appropriate.
Cr. 3. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Develop an understanding of the language as an object of scientific inquiry.
2. Develop a critical awareness of explanations for language-related phenomena.
3. Learn a vocabulary for talking about language and linguistic phenomena.
4. Develop basic skills for conducting a linguistic analysis.
5. Develop general academic skills in critical thinking and communication.
6. Develop a basic understanding of world languages and the application of basic linguistic principles to those languages.
